Today, we are honoured to have an interview with author Sara Francis. Sara has written poetry and the scifi/YA trilogy, The Terra Testimonies.
Recently, I posted her blog piece on utilizing the five senses for writing as part of her blog tour. Subsequently, she kindly agreed to an interview.
Where do you come from and how did this place influence your writings?
I grew up in a large Catholic family that loved to sing, draw, write, play music, and everything in between. I was brought up as a creative and the love and joy my family had for each art. Unsurprisingly, these were the most important influences throughout my entire career.
You started writing stories through music/songs. What made you change to writing novels?
While I still love storytelling through music, there was something about composing (if you will) an entire story that was compelling to me. I could create a vast world filled with characters that would be brought to life through words. It became another outlet for me to tell my stories on a grander scale, whilst still offering the enjoyment that I provided with my music.
This blogger: Yeah, that is a very good reason for starting to write novels. (*Smiles warmly.*)
You have published a collection of poems (Stardust), children’s novels (Adventures of Wobot), and a sci-fi/YA trilogy (The Terra Testimonies). That is quite a range of genres. How do you keep up with all the different tropes for these genres?
Notebooks and sticky notes! My desk is covered with information and details regarding each genre and style of writing. Staying organized and having things written down is the easiest way to handle it.
You recently released the third book in The Terra Testimonies, called The Underground. Why do you think people have enjoyed the series so much?
I believe people enjoyed The Terra Testimonies trilogy because the characters were relatable, the storyline reflected today, and the messages within spoke truths. From what I’ve seen, my efforts to give the story deeper meaning resonates and excites my readers.
This blogger: Those sound like three excellent reasons for why your readers enjoyed the series so much. Well done!
What books, films and/or events were the main influences/inspirations for The Terra Testimonies?
World History was an influence to the writing of the series. Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. I took inspiration from the world’s past mistakes and current events.
This blogger: I am a huge history buff myself and I completely agree.
What two things would you like readers to take away from your books?
I hope that readers will forever seek out what is right and not be afraid to stand up and fight.
On top of being a writer, you are a public speaker. To whom do you tend to speak to, and what are your speeches about?
I am a motivational speaker, focusing on self-worth and how to live life as a Christian in a secular society. Above-all, I believe that every life has value and I hope that, despite the lies of the media, everyone recognizes how important they are.
If you could go back in time in speak with a younger Sara Francis, what advice would you give her about the writing process?
I would tell her to write an outline and be wary about writing descriptions! My first draft was a MESS and I hope to never go through that chaos again.
This blogger: Lol, that is very good advice. I am sure many people can relate to a bad first draft. (*Laughs.*)
Bearing in mind that you are a media communicator, what do you find harder – writing your books or marketing them?
Marketing is the most challenging part of an independent business. In a corporate team, there are about 10 people working to market a product. As an indie-author, it’s just you, doing it on top of everything else.
It is a challenge. But taking the time to flesh out a plan and work towards it is worthwhile.
How has writing changed you as a person?
Writing has made me understand humanity. Through my characters, I feel the pains, joys, and confusion of different people with different strengths and weaknesses.
In addition, It’s made me empathise more and it has given me the drive to help others step out of themselves and become whom they were created to be.
This blogger: This is wonderful to hear. You sound transformed and all for the better.
Are you writing another book at present? If so, what is it about?
Yes! It is currently known as #ProjectDeath on Instagram. It is a Dark Fantasy novel about a medieval world overthrown by monsters; the first one being the New King. I can’t say more about it, but I look forward to finishing it.
Outside of writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
If I’m not writing or designing, I love to either practice music, watch movies with friends/family, or simply relax!
This blogger: It sounds like a healthy balance between working and having a good time. Keep it up!
Lastly, is there anything you’d like to say that you haven’t already in this interview?
My piece of advice for anyone hoping to grow within themselves is to be inspired, not intimidated. This is so important because sometimes we compare ourselves to others and think we’ll never be like them. That’s not the case.
Rather, look at another, more successful person and say to yourself: “I can do that, so let me start now.”
End of Interview
