Interview With Author ML Broome

Today, Paul’s Fantasy Writings has the honour of an interview with author ML Broome, who has written the romance series, A Series of Moments. Recently, I contacted ML Broome and asked her the following questions:

Where do you come from and has your city/town/village influenced your writings so far?

I was born and raised on Long Island, about forty-five minutes from Manhattan. Although I haven’t incorporated either my hometown or NYC into any of my novels so far, I did write about a large city. Having intimate knowledge of Manhattan helped immensely.

Your novel is a romantic story. Do you think writers could write such a story if they don’t feel emotions strongly?

The funny thing is that I never started out to be a romance author. I was always drawn to psychological thrillers and mysteries. I adored a good romance, but I never saw myself writing one. I believed I didn’t fit the typical profile of a romance novelist. I’ve since learned that there is no typical profile. Anyone can write on any topic they feel a passionate interest in.

This blogger: You are absolutely right! Let that be advice to advice to every writer out there.

What was the spark that made you realise that you had to write A Series Of Moments series? Was it a personal event, a book you read, or a film you watched? Or something else?

A Series of Moments was born from a dream. I’m serious! I had a dream that laid out the story like a movie and I jotted it down because I always write down my dreams. Then I forgot about it — at least my conscious mind did. But every night, I fell into the same dream, and the story expanded. It literally wouldn’t leave me alone until I birthed it into the world.

What message would you like readers to take from your book series?

I suppose the message is twofold. The first is that love takes work; immense amounts of work, trust and compromise. The second is that when you truly believe in something or someone in your heart, it doesn’t matter what anyone else in the world thinks or threatens. You must follow your heart. Finding the courage to do so is the trick.

This blogger: Those are great messages. I think your right in saying that courage is the trick. It is the part that enables one to take the leap of faith required to make love and a loving relationship work.

What do you do when you have a bad writing day i.e. you have no inspiration, or the words do not come out correctly on the page?

Honestly? I give myself a break. I’ve learned that when I tried to force writing or inspiration it was akin to shoving a square peg into a round hole. Some days I’ll write 10,000 words. Other days my hands never touch the keyboard. I think it’s like having a workout schedule – It’s just as important to have rest days as well as work days.

This blogger: You have a good mindset, and I like the analogy a lot. I had never compared writing to a work out before.

Which of your characters is most like you? And why?

I’m a blend of Lilly and Janie. Lilly is the heroine and she’s a sarcastic nurse with a kind heart. Janie is the hero’s sister and she’s always trying to maintain the peace and fix situations for people. I’m a fair blend of them both.

Did you find writing the second and third volumes in A Series Of Moments series easier or harder to write than the first volume?

I never intended for it to be a series, but the story was so big that it didn’t fit any traditional publishing guidelines. So, I realized I would have to cut massive amounts of the story and that wasn’t acceptable to me. My editor mentioned that I make it a trilogy and that gave me the room to add additional layers to the characters and deepen the plot.

If you could give your younger self some advice about the writing process, what would it be?

Just start writing. It doesn’t matter that you can’t recite every Shakespearean play or that you truly didn’t enjoy the few pages of War and Peace that you struggled through. There is no one way to be a writer. There is only your way. Start writing and don’t stop until you’ve said all you have to say.

This blogger: (*Smiles wryly.*) Your advice is very practical and funny because it’s true. More people need to have this approach to writing.

Interview with author ml broome and her advice

What is the part about writing that has surprised you most?

How very fulfilling it was to my soul. I spent the last decade as a nurse educator, so I’ve written scads of medical papers and collegiate papers. But to truly expand my imagination and put ideas — my ideas — onto paper was a godsend.

This blogger: That is wonderful to hear. I am so pleased that writing gives you that fulfilment. It’s so important in life.

How has writing changed you?

It’s completed me. I know who I am now and who I was born to be. No more square peg, round hole situation. I’ve found my niche.

This blogger: That’s amazing. Then, just keep doing it. Keep writing!

What’s the best piece of writing advice someone has given you?

The delightful authoress, ML Broome, herself. She may never have seen herself as a romance author, but she has written a wonderful series all the same.

My cousin has written over twenty romance novels and when I called her crying about my first scathing review, she talked me down from the ledge. She told me that not everyone will enjoy my stories, but I’m not writing them for everyone. I’m writing them because it makes my soul happy.

She also pointed out that I was upset about this one review but had failed to mention the ten glowing reviews I had received. Focus on the positive, she told me. That and stop reading reviews, it will make your head spin. She was right on all counts.

This blogger: Your cousin sounds like a very intelligent person, and a positive influence. Good on you for going to him/her to hear the advice you needed to hear.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I work in animal rescue and I’m always around animals in some manner — either my own or rescue babies. I also enjoy hiking in the mountains and nature photography. I’m a bohemian girl through and through. Stick me in nature and I’m thrilled.
