Interview With Author Deanna Martinez-Bey

Today, we are honoured to have an interview with author Deanna Martinez-Bey. Deanna has written five books, ranging from fictional stories to how to make a phenomenal cheesecake. Recently, she kindly agreed to an interview and answered the following questions.

Where do you come from, and has this place influenced your writings at all?

I was born in New Jersey. When I refer to home, that is where I am referring. I variate my characters, so I would say it may influence some of my characters and not others.

You are a copy editor and a social media manager by profession. What came first – You being an author, or you being a copy editor and a social media manager?

Being an author came first. As an author, I had to learn how to be a social media manager for myself. So, now, I offer that service to just a few business owners.

Also, I learned to copyedit my work. After receiving compliments from my publisher on how well my books were edited, I decided to offer this service for authors, writers and bloggers. Recently, I took a copyediting class at a local college to sharpen my skills even more.

This blogger: You sound like a positive and pro-active person, who knows what you have to do succeed. That is an admirable trait, and good on you for honing your skills further!

You also write a blog. What is your blog about?

I am the administrator of two blogs. One is about food – The other is about writing –

You have published five books since 2011, and they vary from contemporary fictional stories to how to make the perfect cheesecake. Are you a fan of cheesecake by any chance? And how does your cheesecake differ from other ones?

As an author, we grow and we change. When I started writing, I started with non-fiction books — two of which I have re-written and will be publishing soon. Then, I wrote a Faith-based novel. As I grew and changed, so did my work.

Yes! I am a cheesecake fan. I grew up making them with my mother for Holidays and have since come up with many of my own recipes. My mascarpone cheesecake recipes won second place in a Taste of Italy contest with Taste Of Home Magazine.

This blogger: That is very impressive. You are very talented, plus I didn’t even know there were such competitions lol.

In your books Twinkle, Twinkle Christmas Star, and When Life Gives You Lemons, Drink Coffee!, your protagonists suffer from a crisis of Faith. Have you ever struggled with your own religious beliefs? And if so, how did you overcome them?

I was in an abusive marriage and struggled with religion and religious people. I was married to a man who claimed to be a Christian; yet, he physically, verbally and emotionally abused me behind closed doors. The last book I wrote, Hot Cocoa, Green Tea, And The Man Who Sweetened My Heart, is a story of Stephanie, a domestic violence survivor.

Is there a moral to your stories?

All of my novels are about self-transformation. The main character starts out one way and transforms into a person they like better by the end of the book.

If you could go back in time and speak with your younger self, what advice would you give her about the writing process?

It’s OK to take a break, but don’t ever give up!

What do you find harder – writing your books or marketing them?

I don’t think either is hard. I enjoy both aspects of being an author. They each take different skills, but both take patience.

This blogger: You are so right. Indeed, both do require patience, to put it mildly.

How has writing changed you as a person?

It is a freeing feeling to write. It takes me away from my life and transports me to a different world. A world I am able to create. It is a creative outlet for me.

Are you writing another book at present? If so, please could you tell us a bit about it?

I just finished novel number 4 and started on number 5. The first three novels I wrote, all contained parts of me and my life. The last one and the current one, do not. They are completely, 100% made up.

Lastly, outside of writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I am a runner and hiker! I work-out six days a week. I am a coffee addict. I love coffee! Also, I have a small home bakery, as I enjoy baking in my spare time as well.

This blogger: You sound like one amazing woman Deanna. So positive and pro-active. Keep it up! Simply, keep doing what you enjoy.
